When using EMG one neutral reference electrode is used. It is called the ground or reference electrode.
It is necessary for providing a common reference to the differential input of the pre-amplifier in the electrode and should be placed as far away as possible from the other electrodes and on electrically neutral tissue - over a bony prominence is usually suggested.
Often, power line interference noise may be reduced and eliminated by judicious placement of the ground electrode.
