What is Efemia Bladder Leakage Support?

  • Efemia bladder leakage support is an insertable medical device intended to temporarily reduce stress induced urine leakage in women, 18 years or older, by supporting the mid-urethra through the vaginal wall.
  • Stress incontinence is a bladder leak caused by pressure on the bladder – eg coughing, laughing, lifting, running - if the mechanisms that should keep the urethra closed and prevent leakage, are not working properly.
  • Supporting the middle of the urethra, through the vaginal wall, can help prevent these leaks.
  • It is a reusable vaginal urine leakage control device made from medical grade silicone.

How do I use the Efemia Bladder Leakage Control Device?

  • Efemia is intended to be used to temporarily alleviate involuntary urine leakage caused by stress incontinence.
  • This urinary leakage control device can be worn up to 16 continuous hours per 24 hour period.
    - or can be used just when you expect episodes of stress ncontinence e.g. when you play sport.
  • Efemia is inserted the same way as a tampon.
  • Whilst you don’t need to, you can remove the device to empty your bladder or bowel and then reinsert.
  • Use water-based lubricant to prevent chafing if you are sensitive in the vulvar and/or vaginal area.

When NOT to use the Efemia Urine Control Device:

  • DO NOT use if pregnant
  • Check with your doctor before starting use postnatally
  • Stop using and see your health professional if you experience any problems that do not go away by ceasing or reducing use.
  • The Efemia urine leakage control device is designed for use by those 18yo +

** If your experience when using a tampon or menstrual cup is that it falls out, we don’t believe Efemia urinary support will work for you. Please contact us for more advice.

Does the Efemia Urinary Control Device come in different sizes?

  • There are three different Efemia Bladder Support replacement device sizes: Small (30mm) Medium (35mm) and Large (40mm)
  • Efemia urinary leakage support is available as a starter kit to let you trial the different sizes, allowing you to discover which works best for you for comfort and performance.
  • You can then purchase single sizes in the future when yours needs replacing.
  • It may take a few tries to find the best fit for you.

These instructions come with the product

Before use:

  • Make sure bladder is empty, wash hands with soap and water
  • Rinse device in drinking water – this reduces friction and makes it easier to insert
  • Find a comfortable position if standing slightly bending the knees can help or putting one foot on a stool

Inserting:

  • Hold device so that back of handle points down towards the rear. Insert device into vagina at a slightly upward angle, similar to a tampon
  • Push it in until the handle rests up against your body so labia cover the handle. Make sure support rings are completely through the vaginal opening and above the pelvic floor

Removal:

  • If possible, empty your bladder before removal
  • Grip outer part of handle and pull gently but steadily until device comes out
  • If you feel resistance or a sense of vacuum, try inserting your finger next to Efemia, pushing it to the side while wiggling it slightly

Clean Efemia with one of the following methods – whichever you prefer

  1. Rinse thoroughly with drinking water. This works well if you need to reuse the device straight away
  2. Boil in drinking water for 10 minutes and allow to air dry
  3. Clean with drinking water and soap, preferably a soap for intimate use. Make sure you clean the entire devic. Rinse thoroughly to remove soap and allow to air dry

Efemia is equal to 4 incontinence pads in terms of carbon footprint.

Replacing incontinence pads with Efemia bladder leakage control devices saves an average 29kg of waste per year!

Some FAQs:

How do I know which size I should use?

If you’re not sure, it’s best simply to test and see, starting with the smallest size. If it doesn’t work for you, go up a size. And, even if the smallest size does works for you, it might be an idea to try a larger size for comparison’s sake. Smaller doesn’t always mean more comfortable.

The starter set has all three sizes of Efemia so you can find out which size works best for you and do so in the comfort of your own home.

How many times can I re-use an Efemia Bladder Control Device?

You can re-use the device as many times as you need up to 16 hours per day during the 3 month lifetime of the product.

How do I know that I need Efemia?

It can take some time before your pelvic floor exercises produce results, so it’s essential to keep at it. Efemia Bladder Support can be an option for you until you feel the desired effect from your pelvic floor exercises. Using Efemia means you don't have to worry about urine leaks in the meantime.
