Kegelmaster: spring resistance exerciser

Kegelmaster: spring resistance exerciser, with FREE Women's Waterworks by Dr Pauline Chiarelli (RRP $15)
(Market price $149.95)

The Kegelmaster is probably the world's best known and biggest selling pelvic floor exerciser, having received enormous publicity and endorsement from celebrities such as Terri Hatcher. The Kegelmaster also very strongly marketed in the US, Australia, NZ, UK and many other countries.

The Kegelmaster's construction consists of two hinged parts, with springs positioned between them. The Kegelmaster is designed to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles through repeated contractions against the resistance offered by these springs. Every Kegelmaster bought from us comes with a FREE copy of Women's Waterworks by Dr Pauline Chiarelli (RRP $15), which provides essential information on exercise technique and frequency.

The Kegelmaster is manufactured in the US from medical grade plastic. Its design incorporates positions for four springs, which are all supplied with the Kegelmaster.

kegelmaster, kegelmaster springs

Utilising the four "posts" onto which the four springs can be mounted in any combination, it is possible to achieve 15 different levels of progressive resistance with the Kegelmaster.

The knob on the side is used to tighten the two arms of the Kegelmaster together while it is inserted into the vagina. Once the device is in place, the knob is undone to allow the two hinged parts to spring apart.

The two sprung hinged sections of the Kegelmaster then provide sprung resistance against which you can contract your pelvic floor muscles, bringing the two hinged arms together.

The extent to which the two hinged sides of the KegelMaster will separate will depend on the individual woman's body, but if the arms don't separate enough to provide space for exercise movement, another spring can be added until a sufficient "gape" is achieved.

The Kegelmaster's manufacturer states that the four springs can be used in any of the following Power Spring Combinations (see post numbers in the image above) :
1,2,3,4, 1*2, 1*3, 1*4, 2*4, 3*4, 1*2*3, 1*2*4, 1*3*4, 2*3*4, 1*2*3*4

A full instructional manufacturer's DVD is provided with every Kegelmaster. See our comments on the Kegelmaster's manufacturer's recommended exercise regime in the Specifications section.

Although we have seen some claims that the Kegelmaster is suitable for women with a prolapse, we suggest that women with this problem should consider whether the design and the closing action is appropriate for them. Your decision will depend on the nature and degree of your prolapse, and alternative exercise aids may be more appropriate. Your health practitioner should be able to advise you if you are unsure.

Buy in a Combo & Save

Resistance: Yes. Adjustable across 15 potential levels via the use of the 4 structural posts and 4 included springs.
Visual Feedback: Not visual, but amount of "gape" in device can be felt
Size: Overall length 170mm; insertable length 75mm width of insertable section 27mm
Manufacturer's recommendations for use:

3 sets of 30 repetitions (90 contractions), working up to 6 sets of 30 repetitions (180 contractions) with a rest of 15 seconds between sets. Repeat at least 3 times per week. See our comments on these instructions below.

Please note that the manufacturer's instructions also state that "A final fatigue of the muscle until the last rep is performed with very little vaginal movement is your goal (you can never overwork the vaginal muscles)."

Many physios would regard this statement as incorrect and purchasers of the Kegelmaster should also note that the manufacturer's recommendations are for a much higher number of quick repetitions than is normally suggested in Australia, and do not include a specific number of "hold" contractions.

Current knowledge about muscle physiology suggests that large numbers of quick contractions may overwork and potentially weaken, rather than strengthen, the muscles. Users may prefer to adhere to Australian guidelines for pelvic floor exercises whilst using the Kegelmaster. These guideines are based on current expert knowledge of how muscles are best strengthened. To ensure our customers have access to current best practice recommendations we supply a FREE copy of Women's Waterworks with every Kegelmaster purchased from us.

Women who are uncertain about the best regime for their own needs should consult a specialist health practitioner for advice.

The Kegelmaster is not manufactured under sterile conditions and we therefore suggest cleaning before initial use. As with all other devices used within the vagina, the Kegelmaster is not recommended for use during pregnancy.
