Pelvic Floor Exercises in history: a glimpse into the past

Like every other area of human health, our knowledge about pelvic floor strengthening has increased by leaps and bounds in recent decades. A look back at the relatively recent past provides some humerous insights, not only into thinking about exercise, but also about human relationships and the role of women.

It's our aim to gather together interesting quotes to form a mini social history of the pelvic floor. All contributions are welcome!

We start with an extract from Restoration Exercises for Women by Ettie A. Hornibrook, published by Heinemann, London, in 1931, which reflects a time of relative sexual innocence, and definitely predates second wave feminism:

Unfortunately...women are still almost incredibly ignorant as to the construction and mechanical working of the lower half of the body....... Thus, the physical basis of marrage is genuinely beyond her comprehension and outside her efficient management and control. In anticipation she regards marriage as a social companionship and a gallant adventure in housekeeping, differing in no vital manner from friendship, excepting, of course that the babies come - just how or why, she does not exactly know. She is very willing to learn about this, and there are many able and willing teachers. Soon after marriage, however, she realises that happiness - and even fidelity - are dependent mainly on her personal efficiency.

The pelvic tilt described by Ettie A Hornibrook doesn't look too different from today's practice, although she did caution that it should be done only gently, and with half the normal repetitions, during menstruation.

She recommended belly dancing for preventing constipation, but warned against these moves during menstruation and pregnancy.
